Big changes are on the horizon for the Huntsville Police Department‘s Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) team, promising a significant boost in their operational efficiency. The department is thrilled to announce the construction of a new 14,000-square-foot CSI building on Wheeler Avenue, directly across from the Huntsville Police Headquarters. This state-of-the-art facility is set to feature advanced labs, spacious office spaces, and dedicated areas for evidence and vehicle processing. The initiative marks a significant upgrade from the previously cramped conditions, aiming to enhance the department’s ability to process evidence with greater speed and accuracy.

Police Chief Kirk Giles expressed excitement about the project, highlighting the desperate need for a dedicated space that matches the team’s advanced technological capabilities. “We have the advanced technology in place for crime scene analysis, but we need dedicated space to be more efficient and process evidence faster,” said Giles. The new building is not merely a workspace upgrade; it’s a leap toward modernizing and streamlining the CSI operations within the Huntsville Police Department, ensuring that they can keep pace with the demands of modern law enforcement and forensic analysis.

But that’s not all – the project, valued at $9.7 million and spearheaded by Pearce Construction, also includes the construction of a separate, climate-controlled 13,500-square-foot facility dedicated to vehicle and evidence storage. This addition is critical, as it addresses the legal requirements for evidence preservation, which in some cases, mandates storage in perpetuity. Investigator Jeremy Phipps shed light on the importance of this facility, stating, “The law requires us to hold evidence for years, and in some cases in perpetuity. The new warehouse will allow us to meet legal storage requirements for decades to come.”

The anticipation for this project is palpable among both the CSI team and the broader community. Scheduled to commence in the late spring, the construction is expected to wrap up within a year, forecasting a new era of efficiency and effectiveness in crime scene investigation for Huntsville. Not only does this initiative promise to enhance the Huntsville Police Department’s forensic capabilities, but it also signals a commitment to growth and innovation within the department. As the team looks forward to moving into their new facility, the community can rest assured that Huntsville is at the cutting edge of crime scene investigation, ready to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow.
